Learner Profiling

At Basecamp Learning Centre, we strongly encourage that students become versatile in learning via different styles. As an English, Maths, and Science centre of learning excellence, we are aware that the different learning styles would fit each subject differently, and the context, content, and topic within each subject would lend themselves better to particular learning styles.

Learning styles

You may have heard of the VARK learning preferences where learners are identified by whether they have a preference for:

  • Visual learning (graphs, charts, maps),
  • Aural/auditory learning (podcasts, music, discussion, lectures),
  • Reading and writing (note taking, lists, textbooks), or
  • Kinesthetic learning (hands-on activities, movement, experiments).

At Basecamp Learning Centre, we are familiar with different models of learning styles, such as the MBTI, the VARK model, as well as the Index of Learning Styles. We have licensed and administer the ILS test as we find it the most useful in helping us craft our lesson plans and in understanding our students. To take the test, click here.

We strongly encourage that students become versatile in learning via different styles. As an English, Maths, and Science centre of learning excellence, we are aware that the different learning styles would fit each subject differently, and the context, content, and topic within each subject would lend themselves better to particular learning styles.

For instance, during our tuition classes, the English language would be taught via visual learning (mindmaps, graphs), customised reading materials, discussions on contemporary issues and applications, as well as our hands-on activities which facilitates deep learning of social issues via first hand expereinces.

For our Mathematics tuition classes, we focus not just on the imparting of concepts through written explanations, graphical analyses, and physical modelling. This helps the brain form connections between mathematical concepts, builds intuition and mastery of mathematical thinking, and stimulates interest in the topic.

For Sciences, we focus on visual demonstrations of concepts and hands-on experiments in our tuition classes which go beyond what is possible in schools to stimulate interest and build stronger understanding of Physics and Chemistry.

By being conscious of the different types of learning styles, our students develop a deeper understanding of their strengths and weaknessess.

Index of Learning Styles

Index of Learning Styles

At Basecamp Learning Centre, we administer The Index of Learning Styles questionnaire, which is an instrument used to assess preferences on four dimensions of a learning style model formulated by Richard M. Felder and Linda K. Silverman of North Carolina State University.

This enables us to understand our students better, and for students to formulate better strategies to take charge of their own learning.

Report

We offer a complimentary test to all students. This learning styles report will be available to parents. The report help you understand your learning preferences and also how you can use that information to become a more effective learner.
