oh the places you'll go

Oh, the places you will go is a book by Dr Seuss that is very famous in America, especially when the graduation period comes round every year. This is a book that prepares you for a new chapter in life, for all the ups and downs that you will have to go through in life, for all the places that you will see, for all the new people you will meet. So whether you are graduating from primary school, secondary school, JC or poly, this book will definitely benefit you. We have included a few excerpts here, along with some reflections, so do read on.

A new start can be slightly nerve-wrecking because of all the unknown. But it is also exciting, because of all the possibilities it represents.

You'll be on your way up!

You'll be seeing great sights!

You'll join the high fliers

who soar to high heights.

high heights

You feel prepared because after all,

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself

any direction you choose.

You're on your own. And you know what you know.

And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

You know the world is your oyster. With determination, passion and zest, you will do great things.

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.

You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.

Wherever you fly, you’ll be the best of the best.

Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don't.

I'm sorry to say so

but, sadly, it's true

that Bang-ups

and Hang-ups

can happen to you.

No matter how blazing hot noon is, night will eventually fall. The silence of the night can be deafening and your loneliness might be unbearable.

You can get all hung up

in a prickly perch.

And your gang will fly on.

You'll be left in a lurch.

Just when you think that nothing could be worse, the dark clouds roll in. Into each life, some rain will fall. You might sit there, cold and shivering, waiting for the storm to pass. Waiting…

Waiting for the fish to bite

or waiting for the wind to fly a kite

or waiting for the end of the night

or waiting for things to be alright

(slight liberty taken with this paragraph)

waiting for things to be alright

But eventually, you get back onto your feet. You trudge through the rain. Though your eyes are blinded by either your tears or the rain, you trudge on.

On you will go

though the weather be foul.

On you will go

though your enemies prowl.

Onward up many

a frightening creek,

though your arms may get sore

and your sneakers may leak.

And eventually, the storm will pass. The sun will break through the clouds again. You will mend your broken heart. You will muster the courage to start again.

On and on you will hike,

And I know you'll hike far

and face up to your problems

whatever they are.

And eventually, you will realise that what you have been through all this time is part of growing up. Your heart may be seared with scars, but your soul is stronger than before. The next time there is a storm in your life, you will not wait for it to pass. Instead, you will embrace the droplets falling on your face and dance in the rain. But that is in the future, right now,

With banner flip-flapping,

once more you'll ride high!

Ready for anything under the sky.

Ready because you're that kind of a guy!

Your whole life still lies ahead of you. So, grab your backpack, enjoy the sunshine and,

Be sure when you step.

Step with care and great tact

and remember that Life's

a Great Balancing Act.

Will you succeed?

Yes! You will, indeed!
